Just Friends by Billy Taylor
Just Friends is a realistic fiction novel. I’ve wanted to read this book for a really long time and it started from when I saw a simple quote.
Just Friends is about a girl and a boy, starting off very young. This book takes you through their whole lives. The ups, downs, tragedies, and miracles. Everything and anything happens in this book. The author does a phenomenal job of relating it to his targeted demographic. This novel is directed towards teenagers, and that’s why I like it so much. The writing really relates to some struggles that us teenagers often face, and also gives a glam life some may dream of.
Short and simple, Just Friends is about a girl and a boy who grow up together, and fall in love without even knowing it. Typical right? Wrong. It’s so much more than that. The author describes every last tradition they have, every last memory together, right back to Ethan’s seventh birthday. The day they met. August was just a new girl, shy and lonely. Once Ethan had started talking to her, she accidentally spilled her drink on his mothers white tie. And ever since then, on Ethan’s birthday, August gives him a new tie.
The whole book is written in a way that makes you want the two of them to get together more than anything. The author will include little details of dialogue, to imply they may be into each other, but he’ll leave it vague enough for you to question. August’s parents give her a hard time because they know Ethan loves her, but of course August doesn’t want to admit it. The author likes to have you on the edge of your seat. Taylor leaves each chapter on a cliffhanger, leaving you eager for more.
Then tragedy hits. Literally. Hit by a truck. The story goes on for so long not knowing if they’re okay, and not knowing where each of them is, it’s so dramatic and so intriguing, and you never want to stop reading. But best of all, Taylor puts a plot twist in there, and Ethan saves Augusts life. How does he do it? Why did he do it? Does he survive? When August finds out what he did, it changes everything. Will she confront him? Does she love him, or what he did? Find out in this incredible book, that I cannot stop reading.
